After the war he returned to journalism. In 1920 Compton published his first novel, The Green Hat. He earned a living as a journalist and writer until 1933, when he took an editorial job with the Gazette Publishing Company in New York City, where he stayed until 1947.
One of his best-known works is the novel "The Comedians" (1928). He then settled into writing plays and screenplays for Hollywood studios.
